THE OIL MAN: THE EVOLUTION OF HOMO MENE
Venezuelan historiography and literature have found in the word "Mene"—the ancestral term used to designate the oil that seeped from the earth—the fundamental axis for explaining our modern identity. While the concept was explored in literature by Samuel Robinson and enshrined by Ramón Díaz Sánchez in his masterpiece Mene (1936), the impact of this resource has transcended narrative to become an anthropological phenomenon.

It is precisely here that the figure of lawyer Guillermo Martínez Vílchez becomes relevant, as he coined the term "Homo Mene" to elevate this relationship to an evolutionary level. For Martínez Vílchez, Homo Mene is not simply an inhabitant of an oil-producing country, but a new social archetype whose psyche, customs, and way of life have been shaped by the omnipresence of hydrocarbons.
